The Naar Phu Trek
One of the highlights of trekking in Nepal - like a time travel experience into a world that no longer exists. This remote valley has only been open for trekking since 2002, and a special permit is still required. The farthest village, Phu, is only a day's walk from the Tibetan border and consequently landscape and culture in Naar Phu have a strongly Tibetan feel. Only recently have lodges been built in the main villages of Meta, Phu, and Naar. Trekking here requires stamina, as the daily distances are longer and tougher than those on other treks. The distance of the Naar Phu trek is 75km, with a total elevation gain of 4470m over the 4-5 days it takes to complete it. The Major pass crossing, Kang La at 5320m, is almost as high as Thorung La on the Annapurna Circuit. For an idea of how medieval life used to be in Naar Phu as recently as 45 years ago, try to get a hold of a copy of TIME LIFE's 'Cloud Dwellers of the Himalayas - The Bhotia', published in 1982.
