This book contains a detailed description of the process of learning to be an anthropologist. After a two-year conversation M.Phil. at the London School of Economics, Alan Macfarlane pursued his doctoral degree at the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London. He and his wife went to Nepal in December 1968 for fifteen months fieldwork among the Gurungs of the Annapurna mountains. The book is based on extensive contemporary materials, including diaries, letters fieldwork notes, photographs and links to films.This book is arguably the most detailed account of fieldwork based on the materials collected at the time in existence. The results of this work are published elsewhere in various places as described in the volume.
